Why We Brought Understatement Into Primary
There is a moment, with every brand we consider, where the decision becomes obvious. With Understatement, it happened somewhere between reading how the label was built and trying the pieces on myself.
Understatement was founded in Stockholm in 2017, by Marie Stolt and Maria Lager. They began with a simple question: what does the body actually need from a piece of underwear. Not what does it need to look like on a hanger, or in a photograph. What does it need to feel like, worn.
The answer they built outward from that question is wire-free by design, not as a compromise. Soft mesh and lace. Flat seams. No stiff padding, no starting point of discomfort. And a sizing structure that treats a fuller cup as a design consideration from the first sketch, rather than an addition made later, in a smaller range, at a higher price.
That last point is what settled it for us. Primary's range already reflects our own view that comfort and craftsmanship are not opposites. Else brings structured, modern lace, with construction to match. Nette Rose brings colour and a lighter, more playful hand. TA-CT brings the minimal, everyday piece that asks for nothing. Understatement sits in this last register — everyday, unfussy — but answers a question none of our other brands were built specifically to answer: a genuine, well-considered range across cup sizes, without stepping down in fabric or fit.
We do not add a brand to Primary because it is popular, or because a gap exists on a spreadsheet. We add it because we believe in the reasoning behind how it was made. Understatement's reasoning held up, piece by piece, under close inspection. We think it will hold up for you too.
Later this week, we will publish a proper guide to how Understatement's sizing works — it is a little different to what most Australian customers are used to, and worth explaining properly rather than leaving you to work it out from a product page.
